Soccer referees are the backbone of youth soccer, ensuring that every match is fair, safe, and enjoyable for players, coaches, and fans. They bring structure to the game by enforcing the rules, protecting players from unsafe play, and teaching young athletes respect for authority and sportsmanship. Beyond just making calls on the field, referees model integrity, impartiality, and composure under pressure—qualities that help shape the character of youth players. Without referees, the game loses its flow, fairness, and the valuable life lessons it teaches. They are not just officials; they are mentors, educators, and guardians of the game

Registration Requirements:
- Minimum Age: 13
- Training: Online & in-person component
- Laws of the Game Quiz: Online Quiz
- SafeSport & Safe Soccer Training: Ages 18 & older
- Background Check: Ages 18 & older
Cost:
- Clinic fee: $20.00 (non-refundable)
- USSF registration: $60.00
- Background check fee: $23.00 (non-refundable; valid for two years)
LSA provides 100% reimbursement for all fees once certified, and you referee 10 games!
LSA will provide a complete referee kit for all first-time referees who get certified.
Process:
Part 1 - Sign up for the Grassroots Online Lessons.
All modules must be completed in full before you can select an in-person clinic.
Part 2 - Select an in-person clinic to attend.
Once you complete the entire online lessons, you'll be able to select an in-person clinic to go to. You will see the words - ONLINE LESSONS COMPLETED highlighted in green to know that you can select the in-person clinic you wish to attend.
The in-person clinic is 3.5 hours. This is the field session done outdoors.
Lots of important information is given to all attendees at the in-person clinics - who you will work for, how to get games, where to get uniforms, etc.
FYI: Bring water for the clinics. Water will not be provided. Also, wear sunscreen or cold weather gear.
Part 3 - Done. Certified.
You must complete both parts in order to become a referee.
